We had a double doctor appointment today. We dragged Dad along thinking that both boys would be getting shots. That was something I was NOT going to do on my own! Luckily, it ended up that neither of them needed shots!
Austin was his usual wiggly, happy, adorable self. He showed off his skills, wanted to see everything the Doc was doing, and laughed hysterically when it was his turn to be "tickled" (the feeling of the tummy, legs, etc.) He measured up to 27 3/4 inches and weighed 18# 5oz, puttin ghim solidly in the 25th precentile-ish.
Shane, however, wasn't so accomadating. his height is 36-ish inches (he was hunching his shoulders and bending his knees to keep the measuring post from touching his noggin). His weight was an even 28#, yes we are fully aware of what a runt our child is. That lands him in the 25th percentile as well.
We were all fairly happy with the state of things. Then the Doc pulled out his developmental testing kit. Here it comes. A few of you have heard me express concerns this summer about Shane's vocal development. The last month or so, he's really been advancing; trying out new words, parroting what he hears and talking about what he sees. So, my concern level had lessened quite a bit. Maybe he was being difficult. Maybe he was shy and didn't want to talk to the Doc. I don't know what his deal was, but he flopped on all but one of the verbal questions. He wouldn't listen to the questions and refused flat out to answer some. At the same time, he would turn around and tell Daddy not to knock the baby on the noggin and other adorable, perceptive things.
Doc figures Shane to be at least 6 months behind in that area. He'll be setting us up with the developmental development people. Unfortuantely we've fallen into a little bit of a crack. The Infant learning people won't deal with them after they turn 3 and the developmental preschool won't start evaluations until August. Doc wants to get on this ASAP, so we'll see what happens. To look on the bright side, if they confirm the delay then Shane gets free preshool until he's caught up with his age group.

Thayne is actually in the -15% and so long as all looks well with him they can't get too worried, he's proportionate and all that, as a paretn though we worry, but look at your dad, wasn't he like 98lbs in highschool? We just have little boys! Things will work out.
ReplyDeleteTo show how much the experts know -Emily tested several months behind when she was 2 and FAILED her kindergarten entry test. She now tests 2 grade levels higher in math and 4 grade levels higher in reading. (she just finished 4th and has a 8th grade reading level)
ReplyDeleteWith Willaim we were told that if they are behind in gross motor skills they will be as far advanced in fine motor skills and vice-verce. But it still doesn't hurt to have them tested and the home hints can be helpful. The free preschool was fun too.
