So Sorry

We woke up VERY late this morning, leaving ourselves only 45 minutes to get everything together and packed up for the snow coming down. So as we prepped for the arrival of the school bus this morning, on the list of things to do was to find the camera. I did promise pictures after all. Well, Daddy took the nice camera to Fairbanks with him. Which is good because it can handle the rough stuff it might go through. Finding the back up camera, turn it on, and off it goes with a deader than dead battery. Ok, emergency steps. I run upstairs and grab my cell phone. Flip it open, jab the camera button, snap a quick picture of Shane in his snow gear with his backpack. THEN I thought to glance at the battery bar- just as the evil little thing decided to BEEP at me. Dead battery.
SO, no pictures of Shane's day getting on the bus. BUT that's ok, because the bus adventure was interesting in itself .
Bus time was 11 AM. By 10 'til, Shane was decked and ready, peering out the door's window, begging to let him outside to wait. So I do, checking on him, standing out in the wind and snow a bit at a time, asking him to come inside every few minutes. NO dice, he was waiting for the bus or bust!
By 5 after he was getting worried. I talked him inside to the window by quarter after and I called the preschool. Shane's wonderful teacher called the bus directly. There'd been a mix up. The boss was out of town, the usual office guy wasn't there, and no one had bothered to tell the bus driver that Shane was on the regulars list now. The bus didn't forsake us though, she came BACK on her route to get Shane, arriving at 11:40 (school starts at 11:45) What an angel!

The return trip, Shane fell asleep. We had to wake him up to get him as far as the house. What a GOOF! But he had a good day, and was quite excited for the rest of the day we had planned.

Tomorrow is another BIG day, hopefully those monsters have given in and fallen asleep WITHOUT cuddling me to insanity, and soon I must follow.

Microwave Magic

Yesterday, the boys decided to play wonderfully downstairs, so I was trying to relax up in bed between emergencies. But, by the afternoon, I came down stairs to the beeping of the microwave. Thinking it was just Austin pushing buttons for fun, I didn't worry too much, until I noticed a shadow revolving in the light of the micro waves and heard a pop.
I opened the door to find a completely popped bag of popcorn in there- with the plastic wrapper half melted to the bag. (NOT the microwave thank goodness) Austin was VERY excited and demanded his treat- since he worked so hard to get it.
His independance was so adorable, that there was no question that he was getting popcorn. BUT, the bag he'd worked so hard on was burnt (happens when you cook it for 7 minutes).
So I got Austin back up on his strategically placed chair, and showed him the steps of making popcorn- especially the take the plastic off part. And he enjoyed a brand new bag of yummo scout popcorn.

Fast forward.

Austin just handed me a package of popcorn with the cutest little "plee" to open the plastic for him. How could I say no? Slight problems when he forgot which button to push, but Daddy helped and they succeeded in a bag of popcorn that wasn't much over cooked.

Hooray for independance!
Coming soon: Shane starts to ride the bus as an everyday thing! I'll take pictures this time.

Late Night Surprises

So, late last night I was awakened by the noise every parent dreads. Rush into the boys room and find Shane leaning over a puddle of yak in the middle of the bed. Fun fun.
But as I went through the needed stripping of people and beds, and cleaning up enough amid the crying kids, the main thought that perplexed me was... what did he eat that was pink?

Sharp Things

So, I finally found the site for both the knife that Austin sliced his finger with...
and the dog knives the boys got for Christmas....
Really cool and reasonably priced I thought.

Christmas 2009

Merry Christmas!
Santa stopped at our house a day early this year, because the Coast Guard has the tradition of Brett working on Christmas Day.
I'm sure most of y'all heard how we had to wake the boys up at 11 to get the fun started. Then milk and cuddles superceded stockings until everyone was fully awake.

The most exciting thing in those socks was kid-proof knives! They are vauguely dog shaped, with an eye printed in the right spot. The boys were VERY excited to help cut the necks of their Christmas bananas, and they love to get slices of cheese to mangle to pieces or to cut thier sandwiches into tiny bits. With absolutely NO chance to cut themselves (I've tried!)

Shane got a funky little speller board like the one he works with at Speech class.

And SOMEone (not us) got Shane a remote control Tundra (just like Daddy's) who of course had to demonstrate. :D

Then Shane finally got his turn.
The LAST present of the year was a big ol' train set!
That immediately had to be set up in one of the perscribed configurations- according to the "map" provided.
Some of you will remember me teasing Brett about how long it took for him to set it up that first day- I eat my words!
There are 4 track plans provided, all equally complex in design. But the one that was chosen for Christmas construction (and that Shane has decided is his favorite) is thoroughly designed WRONG. I found this out as the main track builder since Christmas, and have apologized to Brett. It was a design flaw, not a builder flaw.
Austin got another cool knife-related gift that he adores.
Naked Chef!

The peices of fruit are held together with velcro that you 'cut' apart with the little wooden knife.

And that was our Christmas...

Wishing all the very best of the Christmas season and a Happy New Year!

Christmas Nativity

We went to a friends' house for dinner and The Reading on Christmas Eve.
We attempted a little nativity, with the kids playing the main parts.
Shane refused to play 'Joseph', so Austin volunteered.
Turns out he was only in it to get to ride the 'donkey' which we needed 2 of.
One for 'Joseph' and one for 'Mary'- both donkeys named 'Daddy'.

'Mary' and 'Joseph' by the 'manger'.

Shane was persuaded to briefly be a very stubborn 'angel'.

Later we sang Christmas carols- the kids used my hairbands for Jingle Bells, and Austin got to be the 'Little Drummer Boy'.

Happy Christmas!

Stolen

No, I wasn't there, but Shan had these up on Facebook, so I stole them. They gave us all alot of enjoyment looking at them.
Grandma surveying her kingdom from her throne-
insane crowded chaos of a kingdome, but still.

Uncle Richard trying to figure out something that does NOT require a camera lens.
Doesn't he just LOOK like the struggling film-maker?
Still waiting to see the pictures of the shearing of this sheep.

Aunt Shannon. No, I don't know what's on her head, but Shane thought it was hilarious.

Uncle Spencer (we need to come up with a nickname for you man- there's a 'Spencer in Shane's Thomas the Tank Engine world, and he's not a nice train. BUT, he can pronounce your name now... :) )
Cousin Trevor and his wife Emi- it was lots of fun to see your silly side!
That's a pretty nice tie too by the way.

Uncle Ben with a sleepy Nicole and Christian.
We love you guys!

I hear rumors and whispers of this occurance, Super cool man!

Shane was fascinated with it, but couldn't say 'violin'.
So I told him it was a 'fiddle' and he thought that was even cooler-
and WAY funner to say.

Uncle Abe's facial contortions got LOADS of giggles too,
though at first they thought he was pretty scary..

Here he's checking out the gift the boys picked out for him.

The boys were HIGHLY impressed with this feat.
Both tried it, but with no luck thank heavens.
Thanks for the idea Abe. :P

Quiner tradition of playing games all day Christmas.
I need to find someone to play with me...

The Banks' tradition of doing a puzzle is fun too, but leads to loads of arguments.

Group pictures!!!
BR: Ben, Christian, Joseph, Nicole, Richard and nutty Abe
2nd: Bekah, Patricia, Lexie, Micheal, Mom/Grandma
FR: Spencer, Emi, Trevor, Shannon
Same group being silly- big surprise there, I know.
This one I took over Skype webcam.
Fuzzy and cramped, but thank you all for being good sports.
Merry Christmas!!!

No Longer in Stitches

Shane and I took Austin in to get his stitches removed on Thursday- exactly 7 days after he got them put in. Oddly, they were excited to go to the doctor's office, probably because they didn't know what was going on.
Austin's finger was a little red and swollen, he liked to pull at the stitches. In addition to that, the nurse commented a number of times that the stitches were very tight.
(I thought that funny. Wouldn't you want them fairly tight so as to hold the parts of the finger together? Not too tight so as not to cut through the tiny bit you're allowing to hold the stitch, of course, but tight enough so everything is held thoroughly shut. I'm no nurse though.)
She was tuggin' as carefully as she could and even had to pull out those big magnification goggles to get the last 2 stubborn ones.
Austin was a tiny bit more uncomfortable than before; no numbing agent this time. In between her tugging, he'd pull his hand away for me to hold for a second before putting it back up to keep trying. Otherwise, he just sat perfectly still and watched most of it all. When he got tired of watching (I think it was getting more painful too) he turned (just his body) and cuddled into me so he wouldn't have to see.
He was SUCH a brave little guy! He got a cool shiny silver bandaid that lasted until we got home. Then it fell off and we went back to the super sport bandaids that really stick.
Shane was a trooper too. Totally bored, watched for a few seconds a few different times but otherwise sat/stood back and waited for the ok to head out the door.
He's healing up well and actually seemed to enjoy the whole adventure. (Except the cutting part and the numbing needle part) I still get a bit sad everytime I see it, though I think that's going to last for a while. Sorry, no pictures. If I leave the bandaids off for long without watching him closely, he starts peeling at the dead skin and picking at the healing scar. And it's rather gross still.

Austin is His Father's Son

So I was actually planning on doing a big Blog catch-up this weekend, especially since I have yet to post Halloween pictures and it's almost Christmas. Ha, well, as some of you have heard, Austin trumped all plans yesterday with creating quite an adventure.

To set the scene, I was sitting in the living room, surrounded by gifts that needed wrapping. Things for such a variety of people that I'm sure I'll get something mixed up. As I'm wrapping, the boys are playing around me. Bags of gifts on one side, Austin on the other, I forge ahead- wrapping like a mad woman. You know how wiggley 2 year olds can be, so I don't really notice when he gets up and wanders off to the bare Christmas tree- only 4 feet away.
Thump, Bump, Cry. I look up and see Austin has rubbed blood on his head, so I jump up to see if he smacked his mouth on the entertainment center or something. Then I notice the knife I'd gotten for myself (it's a bright orange pareing knife, new and sharp) and the blood actually dripping from Austin's finger. Thankfully, we'd had a couple liquid spills that day, so I'd brought a handful of clean towels out to have on hand. Grab one of those to wrap around his hand until I can get him calm enough to look at it. Then I wished I hadn't. I never want to see my children's muscles laid open like that again.
Shane comes in and is terribly confused that I'm yelling for him to get pants, socks, and shoes on "RIGHT NOW" (that's the phrase I use to let him know I'm serious in every day life). Miracle- my little rag doll Shane DOES IT, by himself, no help, no tears, no questions. I get on the phone (because there's NO WAY I'm going to strap Austin into a car seat and let him bleed while I drive) to try to raise Brett, but he's not in his office. So I commit the crime of Airstation wives everywhere, calling the off-limits phone. Anyone recieving a call on that phone that's not a real life emergency automatically owes the whole crew beer. Took them a few minutes to find Brett after I told them it was urgent. To his credit, Brett didn't question me one bit when I declared that Austin had cut his finger and we needed Brett to come and take us to the Emergency Room. I guess it counts to get him off beer detail.
After hanging up, I walk Shane over to our next door neighbor's house to ask if they could keep him for awhile. Christina is wonderful and only asked if Shane had any allergies before she shewed us off to the hospital. Still waiting for Brett in the 5 minutes that seem like forever, I go back into the house and find Austin's binky, turn off the TV, and lock the door. We had started walking up the road when Brett pulled up (not because he was taking his time- which he definately wasn't, I just couldn't sit there and wait while my baby bled).
At the hospital, it was getting the info, calling the on-call doc of the day, repeating the story to the nurse and accepting compliments at how calm Austin was being. I don't know why Brett (and the nurse) kept wanting to see the cut, he got paler every time; but he held out until after the sewing started before needing "to take a walk to get a drink". I hated watching the blood well up out of the cut and the shots with the numbing agent were awful with the crying and struggling. I could let myself see the needle do it's thing, but the knot tying I was ok with. Austin was fascinated with the whole process once he couldn't feel the pain. He really liked watching the doc do her thing. Both the doctor and the nurse repeatedly commented on it, saying he'd grow up to be a wonderful surgeon the way he kept his head and was interested in the operation. I thought I counted 7 stitches, Brett (looking later) said he could only see 6. Either way, it did not beat the Banks Family Record of # of Stitches Recieved in the First Emergency Room Visit- which is Brett with 9 stitches. Or at least that's what he says.
He fell asleep as they were putting on the bandage. They used that cool tube gauze and one of those finger things. Unfortunately, that makes it hard for those of us without a cool finger thing to recreate the bandage job when he pulls it off 5 minutes after waking up back home.
Brett specifically wanted to get the pictures BEFORE I changed Austin into jammies, so you could see the blood on the sleeve and spotted down his front. *shivers* I still have to wash that.
Since Austin doesn't much like bandages in any form, we had to tape his 2 fingers together and wrap him up good to make sure it stayed on the required 48-72 hours.
The bandage alone makes it look much worse than it is. Later that evening, Austin was up jumping off the back of the couch to jump on the seats. I'll upload that video tomorrow. :)
Though I know it's bound to happen, I really don't want to do that again any time soon.

Pumpkin Heads!

Pumpkin carving time!!!
Seems like every year, we' wait for Brett to join us in pumpkin carving and end up hurrying the night before to get it done. This year we did it in the middle of the day w/o daddy.
Wish I could combine these shots... the top one is a good one of Austin, the bottom caught Shane... *sigh* little boys.
SCoooooooooooooooping out the guts!
Shane scooped twice with the long-handled scooper...
at school he insisted on wearing gloves before he'd touch the open pumpkin.
Austin helped me sort the seeds from the guts ... for roasting.
Finished Product...in the dark...
Shane insisted on the tongue. They worked together to blow out the candle.
Happy Fall!

Dissolve into Insanity

Ok, so as the kids got home after the murder party... it kind of wound 'down' into kareoke.
Zack & I singing Beattles.
This was hilarious. He was singing 'Angie' (his wife's name- next to him)
And he was purposely murdering it- so hilarious.
Go Angie!
and Ryan!
Brock- rockin' out.
Brock and Zack hitting the high notes
The 2nd most hilarious part was...Brett singing Bohemian Rhapsody!
After that, I abandoned him to get the sitter home.
Forgetting that w/o Brett I would have to take the kids with me.
As Mom, I did what I had to do- a screaming Austin drowning out the radio the whole time.
Ran back to pick up Brett and didn't get an answer-
thier music was cranked up too loud for anyone to hear the phones ringing.
But they had so much fun that we're doing it again for FHE tonight. I gotta go!
