Brett's

YOU'RE A JACOB!

You’re down to earth, easy to please and people usually enjoy your warm company.
Although you form lasting relationships, those closest to you can be put off by your
stubbornness and temper. You can also be annoyingly persistent, but you are loyal
and would bravely defend those that you love.

You are thoughtful and care very deeply for your family. A loving home is of great
importance to you and you always try to make people feel welcome. Although you have a great capacity to love, you also have a great capacity to hurt, so at times you can be
sensitive. You're firm when you need to be, but people trust your judgment and
appreciate the kind way you always handle things

Crazy Days

Just an FYI, I'm in the midst of a few very insane days... Austin's Dr appointment Thursday, Shane had another school appointment today, tonight I'm 1/2 in charge of a babyshower, tomorrow there's a book party , Sunday there's primary and Austin's birthday, then Brett may (or may not) be off shrimping (his buddies had to bail cause of family stuff and he's still trying to find someone else to go), I need to get in to the WIC office, and to Public Health to get Shane's ears tested- if he'll let us. Just insanity all around. I'm hoping to get the posts from these adventures out first of next week though so come back and check then!

Special Day

Today is a special day.

So I'm gonna tell a story about this day last year. I woke up sore but I didn't have time to dink around. I got up, scrubbed the bathtub and toilet- Mom was coming in the next day. Got Shane ready and headed out the door. He spent the morning at a friend's home while I went in to physical therapy, trying to teach my back to deal with the strain of lugging around a preggo belly. Yikes!

I was having occasional contractions, but was sure that if I just got to lay down for a second, they'd go away. At noon-ish, I took the friend that had watched Shane for me, out to lunch. The kids ran amok and I timed the contractions that weren't going away. I mentioned to my friend that I was thinking the baby was coming that day and she was ready to jump up and take me to the hospital right then.

After lunch, I headed to the big furniture sale that was going on. By the time I got there and called Brett to come look at a few things, my friend had called another friend (who was set to watch Shane while I was in the hospital), who had called Brett to find out what was going on. he of course had no clue since I hadn't spoken to him yet.

We spent a couple hours trying to find just the right dressers- we were unsuccessful as evidenced by the fact that we still don't have a single dresser that isn't broken at least once.

Brett went home to sleep- he was on the midnight to 8 am shift- and Shane and I headed to the grocery store to make sure we had plenty of stuff for Dad to survive with Shane and no Mom. It took a bit longer than usual because the contractions were making me pause now.

At home I finished cleaning up for Mom's visit. She called while packing and I had to tell her that she was going to miss all the fun. I sat and read and watched the clock for the rest of the afternoon.

Around 9 I decided that it was time to take Shane and head out. Brett didn't want to wake up, so it took a while to get our jammies man, (and Shane) out to the car. We dropped Shane off at our friend's house- they wouldn't let me stay to help get him settled and he screamed the whole time. But it was probably for the best that we didn't wait around.

Brett dropped me off at the entrance of the hospital and went to park the car. A lady that smelled very strongly of cigarettes and something else held the door for me and insisted on helping me to the nurse's station. After they got me all settled, Brett asked permission to run home and get a few things, like the video camera and some gum (he had food breathe). I told him he had a half an hour. It was 10:15 by this time and we were just waiting on the doctor.

15-20 minutes later, he'd shown up, ran across the street to his office to make sure he had my birth plan and was walking back and forth between me and the doors looking for Brett.

I could no longer wait to push, just as Brett came down the hallway. They were teasing him that he almost missed it- next time I just might let him.

After a couple pushes they paused- (do you know how hard it is to pause during labor?!) to break my water. A couple more pushes and another, longer pause to suction out the baby's face and TA DA! Austin Tucker Banks October 8 2007!

It took some adjusting on everyone's part but eventually our family was gelled again.

Today Austin turned 1!

The official cake and ice cream will be on Sunday. Dad won't get to be there, but that's another story. After running all over town trying to find some present to get for Austin. Something not too expensive, that we didn't already have, that he would like... ugh! We were literally all over town and both the boys were real troopers about the whole ordeal, so we decided to have a little party of our own. We got a Thomas the Train balloon and some mini cupcakes from the store.
Austin had 2.

Shane had the frosting off 3.

After being strippes Aussie went to play and is a happy guy.
Dad turned his carseat around a couple days ago and the more we try to wait on the milk thing the more he steals Shane's sippy cup, so he's forgone the usual day's events.
Shane opened Austin's present from the library- a Happy Birthday book on beginning sign.
His doctor appointment is tomorrow and there's been quite the hullaballoo on the chicken pox vaccine- I don't know what we'll do just yet.
I love my Big Boy.

Busy Day

It's been a busy couple of days- my friends' books arrived. After 4 trips to the mailboxes, I got them all into the house. Counting and sorting and calling, it's sometimes crazy with the boys "helping" but at the end of it all, I like knowing that there are kids out there enjoying the books.

Book Nook

I have been mocked one too many times lately about my reading material, so I've decided to explain...

When I was a kid, I read alot- insane amounts sometimes. As a teen, my reading decreased a smidge. Mostly because I was having to read text books so much that reading for fun took a back seat. I'm not the only one of "the kids" to have this love of books, and we all know where we got it from- Mom and Dad. Mom would read during the few times that she actually sat still, breakfast and lunch- I do too. Dad would read in the evenings to unwind.

He'd read all sorts of different books, but the ones that I remember seeing most often were the westerns- Louis L'Amour. I would tease him about them even worse than my brothers and sisters tease me about listening to country. How the story was always the same. The hero was always the same type of guy. And the good guy always got the girl. It was simple, it was dull and it was silly.

In college my personal reading practically disappeared. I was frazzled to insanity, wandering the library in a daze, and the thought came to me that I needed a good book to read just for fun. I thought of all the authors that I usually read and discarded each one for requiring too much brain power that I simply did not have to spare. As I stood there in the hallway, I took a minute to look around, hoping for inspiration. Low and behold I found myself standing right next to and entire 6-shelf bookcase FULL of Louis L'Amour. They were thin, they were paperback (no added weight to my pack) and as far as I knew they were totally brainless!

I read only a few in my time down in Utah, but they were pleasingly relaxing. They weren't the brainless fluff I thought they were either. True, the good guy always got the girl, and the bad and good were fairly easily defined, but the "simple" cowboys were some deep characters! They were learned and philosophical, dedicated and strong. And the best part was that no matter how complicated the story was or how involved I'd gotten in the characters, I always felt restful at the end- which was always good.

Even Shane has figured out that I'm a bit more chill if I've been reading my books- even when I'm not able to read right then, he's on the ball to bring me "my book".
So If you don't mind, you hecklers, lay off and let me get my western fix!

I've found 2 that I particularly am fond of.
The first is a very well disguised love story. Amid the fistfights and rustlers, there's letters sent by way of tumbleweeds from a lonely girl to the gunfighter/ cattle hand. Neither one of them figured out the identity of the other until the very end.
The second was a bit different than Mr. L'Amour's usual stereotype. The hero- a Sackett- was a 16 year old girl from the Tennessee hills. And yes, the girl got the guy in the end.

Mistaken

As I organize my pictures for my longer posts tonight, I gotta tell you what happened with Brett and Shane this morning.

Brett was cuddling Austin in bed, trying to persuade him into sleeping a little longer so Brett could sleep more too. Shane was up and doing, which means he was chasing Kat around. All of a sudden Shane starts yelling for Daddy from the stairs. He sounds paniced so Dad jumps up and runs to him, and finds him with POOO all over his hands. Dad is VERY frustrated, thinking that Shane had an accident, or had gone in the potty and decided to explore where the "rock bums" were coming from.
Dad was a trooper and got Shane all cleaned up without yelling or making any sort of remarks. Then he checked the toilet- nothing. He checked Shane's rump- nothing. Quite confused, Brett started upstairs to get Austin... and found a peice of TP and a lump of cat dooin's. Shane found the mess- or saw kat make the mess- and was trying to clean it up for Dad, just like he's seen us do. Unfortuantely, he's not terribly experienced and didn't know how to keep the TP between the dooin's and his hand.

Looooove Notes

As a precurser to my little list, let me explain. I was talking with my younger sister Shannon yesterday- she's in like with another new guy (I'm sure you all remember how it was back in the day). The funny thing was that I ran across this funny list online right afterwards, so I thought I'd share. I edited the unfunny, uninteresting, or inappropriate.

1. Men who kiss their wives in the morning live five years longer than those who don't.
2. Feminist women are more likely than other females to be in a romantic relationship.
3. The single biggest predictor of love is proximity.
4. Falling in love can induce a calming effect on the body and mind and raises levels of nerve growth factor for about a year, which helps to restore the nervous system and improves the lover's memory.
5. Love can also exert the same stress on your body as deep fear. You see the same physiological responses — pupil dilation, sweaty palms, and increased heart rate. (love is a scary thing.)
6. Brain scans show that people who view photos of a beloved, experience an activation of the caudate — the part of the brain involving cravings.
7. The women of the Tiwi tribe in the South Pacific are married at birth.
8. Eleven percent of women have gone online and done research on a person they were dating or were about to meet, versus seven percent of men.
9. Couples' personalities converge over time to make partners more and more similar.
10. The oldest known love song was written 4,000 years ago.
11. According to mathematical theory, we should date a dozen people before choosing a long-term partner; that provides the best chance that you'll make a love match.
12. People telling the story of how they fell in love overwhelmingly believe the process is out of their control.
13. Having a romantic relationship makes both genders happier. The stronger the commitment, the greater the happiness!

And lastly, this one is for you, Stan!
14. People who are newly in love produce decreased levels of the hormone serotonin — as low as levels seen in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Perhaps that's why it's so easy to feel obsessed when you're smitten.

Baldie Bean

Brett has taken to cutting his hair when no one is home- especially since he figured out a way to check the other angles of his head without my help and 2 mirrors.
I thought it was pretty funny. As you can see- the hair keeps migrating to his face.

Good Bye Baby Fuzz

Last week Daddy and I started talking about commemorating Austin's Big 0-1 birthday.
We went over the usual, friends, toys, cake, etc... and Dad mentioned that Aussie could probably use a haircut- more than the trim I usually give him. Long-haired Hippie child.

As you can see, it was getting a bit on the long side, so I agreed and didn't think much of it.

That is.. until we were on a library trip. The boys were terrorizing the place, while I tried to get checked out. A nice older lady was wrangling Austin in the entry way- keeping him from injury and escape. I went to grab him up... again.. and she commented on how adorable she was. (did you catch that, or see it coming- "she") I corrected her- and she went on to say that he was simply to gorgeous to be a boy. Ugh! The hair has GOT TO GO! So it went.

Austin fell asleep on me yesterday. Brett fetched me some scissors and I akwardly removed all Austin baby fuzz hair! At times I was doing it one-handed, and Brett found a few spots to tease me about- but all in all I thought I did an ok job.
And afterwards we gotto have a bit of fun! Shane watched me cutting Austin's hair and he wanted to give it a go. But of course, that wasn't going to happen. So I had a stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. I stuck all Austins hair clippings into a plastic play cup and handed Shane the scissors. In hind-sight, I should have saved a lock to put in Austin's baby book- I thought I had but now it's AWOL. Shane practiced his cutting and snipping and had tons of fun.

He was very careful to keep the scissors away from all important body parts- they were rather sharp. And he tried very hard to keep all the bits of hair in the red cup, and I appreciated it. He was also careful not to touch any of it, asking me to do it on the rare occasion some landed outside the cup.

Fun with Kat

It started out a drowsy morning, just like most mornings. With Dad's position, it was probably a Sunday. Austin was helping me wake up Daddy when he noticed the furry bunk-mate.This time the cat got away, by the loss of a few extra hairs.
Other times, Kat hasn't been as lucky.
But Kat remains playful and mostly friendly...
He loves anything dangling or protruding...
like the camera strap.
